What is the Secret Ingredient?
Anyone charged with the duty of creating meals for their family on a regular basis knows that this is not always the case. Preparing food can often feel like a chore, especially if you're anticipating a less than stellar review from those gathered around your table. At least at my house it is a rare occasion that all four mouths I feed love a meal. There's always someone who doesn't like chicken (even though I'm sure she liked it last week), or someone who has crossed broccoli off her "the vegetables I will eat list" which leaves me wondering if there is actually anything left on said list.
This sense of time in the kitchen being a chore doesn't only apply to preparing family meals.
How about when your kiddo springs on you that she's up for snack duty at school the next day. Yes, it's 8:00 pm and yes, some advance notice would have been nice. It's not enjoyment I'm feeling as I head to the store or scour the cupboards wondering what I might throw together to feed 20 children. Perhaps it's the unexpected dinner guests that your husband graciously invited over without checking with you. Or maybe the seven dozen baked goods needed for the fundraiser. The list goes on.
This must be the reason why when the Trio was wandering through a quaint downtown store and stumbled upon this mug by Anne Taintor we literally laughed until we cried.
The ingredients you're adding to not just your cooking but your life are worth considering. Rarely does a project approached with a heavy portion of resentment turn out well. Whether it's an undertaking at work or baking birthday cake for your child, it's difficult to give your best when your heart's not in it.
If resentment is the main ingredient in something you're doing in your life it may be time to reevaluate. Maybe a simple attitude adjustment will do the trick or perhaps it's time for a whole new recipe. Resentment is an ingredient best sprinkled lightly. If you're feeling like serving up a hefty portion, get the store-bought ricotta, it will taste better.
