By now, the banal hustle and bustle of a daily school grind has grown tiresome for us moms. Overseeing homework, enforcing bedtimes, shuttling children hither and yon with whatever supplies they may require can be exhausting! Not to mention my car (okay, minivan) is a disaster. I can feed a small village from the snack remnants between the seats. It’s enough to leave, at least the three of us, teetering on the edge of sanity. We can’t wait for all the school related duties and obligations to end!
We can feel the freedom.
Or maybe that’s just us.
In our experience, leisurely mornings are usually thwarted by children who, unable to pry themselves out of bed on a school day, are suddenly up at the crack of dawn determined to squeeze the most out of their unscheduled summer days. Days of spontaneous exploration begin with the best of intentions and quickly erode into whiny protests, fits, complaints and sibling discord that rivals civil war. The only bonding that happens is during a collective time out when the brood conspires to bring down the only common enemy in the house – MOM.
We are warning you now. Summer is a tactical affair.
When things get rough and the dreamy days of summer seem to take on that inevitable nightmarish quality, it’s time call in reinforcements. Gather your friends, whip up some simple yet tasty food, pour a glass of wine and let the children run amok. In the process, you may just create one of those nostalgic summer moments we dream of having before the novelty wears off and reality sets in.
